The Massey Flute Studio provides an encouraging environment in which
students not only strengthen their ability on the flute, but also develop a thorough
understanding of music. Lessons focus on exercises to develop the student’s tone production,
intonation, technique, and articulation that build the foundation of a student’s playing.
Scales play an essential role in furthering a student’s technique and are covered in many
forms to increase ease of playing. Etudes and repertoire are selected to cover all periods of
classical music and standards of the flute repertoire.
Following the principles of informed practice, students are taught a variety of topics in
addition to flute techniques. These include injury prevention, music theory, music history,
flutist backgrounds, music appreciation, performance anxiety, and much more. These topics play
an essential role in the student’s training and provide a complete knowledge of music. Flute choir,
flute studio class, and studio recitals are organized to provide opportunities to meet
and perform with other students. A resource page is also available for students to easily
access recordings and increase their familiarity with the repertoire.
